Food and nutritional security is the realization of the right of all to have regular and permanent access to quality foods in sufficient quantity, without compromising access to other essential needs, based on eating habits that promote health, respect cultural diversity and that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable.

Polis has been active in the field of Food and Nutritional Security (FNS – SAN in Portuguese) since 1993, developing research studies, training grassroots groups, municipal civil servants and providing advisory services to governments, social groups and movements. Polis participates on the National (CONSEA) and Municipal (COMUSAN) Food and Nutritional Security Councils and is one of the coordinators of the São Paulo and Brazilian Food and Nutritional Security Forums.

The global objective of our activities in the field of Food and Nutritional Security is to promote food as an essential human right, to be seen within dignified social and cultural conditions and healthy eating habits, as part of the integral development of the human being. Preparation of guidelines for Municipal Food and Nutritional Security policies is but one of the outputs resulting from research in this area.

Polis’ activities in this area for the next few years should expand implementation of local programs and policies based on these guidelines, influencing national public policies of Food and Nutritional Security and strengthening grassroots groups in the struggle for the human right to food.
